Saul Bass inspired 'A weekend at Bernie's' film poster

Today at college, we had the challenge of creating a poster in the style of the famous Saul Bass! We were each given a film to base our poster on. I was given 'A weekend at Bernie's', a film that I have not yet seen. It was released in 1989 and starred Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy.

As I had never seen this film, I watched some clips on YouTube and found it was hilarious...why have I not seen this! It's definitely one to watch and I will be very soon!

Anyway, I used the idea of the character that is 'Bernie' being a 'puppet on strings', as he is dead the two main characters have complete control over his movement.

The style of Saul Bass was so interesting to research, he is now definitely one of my favourite designers! I loved to design in his style with such a limited colour palette, it really does give the poster such a 'stand-out' look!

So here is my version and take on the amazing Saul Bass design style...

Learn 2 Teach logo up and running!

So here is my 'Learn 2 Teach' logo on their website! Can't believe they actually chose mine! If you guys want to go and have a look the site is www.learn2teach.eu. It also features a photograph of myself and some college peers!

Learn 2 Teach WINNER!!!

So this morning I found out that from the 5 logos that had been shortlisted from, my logo had been chosen by the European partners at 'Learn 2 Teach via Social Web'! These are the logos they have chosen and will appear on their Facebook page, Twitter page, website, leaflets and all stationery! eeeek!

     

Branding myself

For my portfolio, I had to design my own 'logo'. I chose to simply use my initials. I came up with some different variations of my initials until I was happy with one. I actually found it difficult to work with the letters 'V' and 'D' as they don't really flow together. However, here is what I came up with and my chosen logo!

Learn 2 Teach: Logo Design & Branding

I recently took part in a competition to design a logo and create the branding of a European company called 'Learn 2 Teach. My designs were shortlisted, so here are a few variations of the chosen designs and how they could be applied to a letterhead etc. I took on board the amendments that needed to be made and this is what I have come up with.

Creating my Portfolio

For my latest brief at college, we have been told to put together our own portfolio. Below are some pictures of what I have come up with. I have followed a plain and simple style as to not distract the target audience from my work(inside the portfolio). It includes lino printing, boxes, hand-illustrations and lots of brown.

                                  

Mother's Day Tulips

This is a collage I have made using the photographs taken of some Tulips I gave my Mum for Mother's Day. I layered them up and changed the colours to get this effect, it adds depth and a whole lot more colour to the original image.

Countdown to Summer

I literally cannot wait for summer! So on that note, I created this piece, using a photograph from previous a holiday in Tenerife and some typography. We work hard all year round and look forward to those important little breaks away from everything!

T.G.I.F

This is another piece Photoshop work, inspired by the saying 'Thank God it's Friday'. It being Friday I thought it was the right time to post this piece. I've used Photoshop to create a textured background and then simply placed white text on top, to contrast against the dark background, which really makes the text stand out.

Smoke and Sequins

This is the outcome of layering and editing smoke and sequins on Photoshop. I've lightened and darkened certain layers to get this effect, changed the opacity and put different effects on each layer, to come to this final look. I had fun making this, can't wait to play around with this style some more!!

To get more to grips with Photoshop, I played around with different images of smoke and added colour to get this effect. I think my knowledge of the tools are slowly getting better! 

Magazine Design

This is my magazine design for a local council on the issue of homeless people. I designed the front cover of the magazine and a double-paged spread. I went for a simple theme, that looked professional yet represented Gloucestershire Council, through the colours used.

For my double page spread, I limited myself on the amount of text, as most people are not keen to read a huge amount. So I kept it to a reasonable amount which was visually pleasing.

Dave McKean inspired work!

Here's a piece of my work. I've taken inspiration from the artist Dave McKean and produced this piece... (admittedly it is pretty freaky but pretty at the same time!)

Oh how I love technology! I am currently blogging from the comfort of my warm double-bed... aaah I could get used to this! I'm new to this whole blogging thing, but I think I'm slowly getting there!
